Why Twitter is changing the recruiting world for college-bound athletes

Great article about TCU Football Coach Gary Patterson and how he has reinvented himself with the help of Twitter.

In summary...

Why is Twitter is such an integral tool for college coaches?

  • College coaches must recruit every day. It’s that simple.  If they don’t, they lose. Twitter is an easy, effective way for coaches to gain a great advantage over those who don’t use it to recruit players.
  • Twitter allows coaches to relate to people, and at the end of the day, recruiting is purely about people.
  • Twitter is a vehicle to show others the “real” you, and never before has this been more vital for college coaches when it comes to recruiting players.
How can student-athletes incorporate Twitter into their recruiting efforts?

  • If you aren’t communicating with coaches, then you aren’t being evaluated by coaches either.  Twitter is a great platform to gain an advantage over other recruits. It’s not like email (not yet at least), where coaches have to sift through hundreds of emails per day and may never get around to replying to them. If you send a coach a direct message via Twitter, not only is s/he likely to follow you, but your chances of getting a direct message back are much higher.

  • Twitter allows people to relate to one another.  It allows coaches to relate to you and you to coaches. Ultimately, you will choose your perfect fit school based on multiple personal factors.  And the better you get to know that coach, the more s/he is going to play a major role in your final decision.

  • Twitter is one of the easiest ways to help college coaches get to know the real you.  The other prospects on a coach’s recruiting board are just as talented as you are, so your ability to develop meaningful relationships with coaches throughout the courting process is critical to your success. Twitter allows you to follow coaches, ask coaches to follow you, send them direct messages and create a simple solution for them to message you back. Not to mention, it gives you valuable insight into the person behind the whistle, and it allows you to showcase the real you as well.
